Carnival Comes To Carshalton

Published: Thursday 7th July 2011

Round Table owns a fifty per cent stake in Carshalton Carnival, and so on Carnival Day, we all help out.  Some of us are even on the Carnival Committee, spending several months organising the event.  This year the two most important posts – Parade and Arena, were organised by Tablers.

This year’s Carnival was a great success.  The weather held off and the park was full of visitors enjoying the numerous stalls and arena acts.  The parade was warmly welcomed too, with many people cheering and clapping, as we made our way through the streets of Carshalton.

The parade was made up of motorised and walking floats from local groups and charities, who all put a lot of effort in decorating the vehicles and practising their routines.  We left Tweedale Road at Midday, and made our way to Carshalton Park.  The floats were judged and on arrival in the park the trophies were handed out.  Our Carshalton Carnival Queen was then crowned.  All this with the obligatory photo shots with the Sutton Mayor.

Then it was the turn of the acts to perform in the arena.  The cheerleaders were followed by the marching band, and then it was the turn of the headline acts: two stunt teams wowing the huge crowds that had gathered around the fencing.

Around the park local charities and organisations had their own stalls selling home-made gifts and promoting their work.  On one of these stalls could be found a few cheeky Tablers promoting our group and selling popcorn and candyfloss.

The acts finished up in the arena and then it was the turn of the bands to take to a specially created stage to entertain the crowds.  The bands are made up of local groups, so this is our way of promoting local talent.

As the sun went down the music from the stage was replaced by the music from the fun fair, which kept the rides going well in to the night.

If you would like to join our group and help organise these fun events, please get in touch.
